yikes [03 Dec 2009|04:10am]
So I'm almost finished putting together this 9 page mini. Seems so small for something I've worked really hard on, but I had the cover in my head for a long time and when I sat down to draw it, it came really easily. Fortunately!

I didn't end up coloring the mini though... I started it but ended up thinking it wouldn't be developed enough. I'm going to practice more. Don't think I'm going to post the last 4 pages of the mini on here, I don't really like the effect of having them one on top of the other, with you scrolling down, but I'll make another post when I have the mini together, and I can send some out to anyone who wants one.

I'm also making a bunch of little booklets of some of my doodles from my sketchbooks and class notes. Some examples:

Another thing about the waves mini, something I feel kind of weird about, is that I ended up drawing the 'cat that gets you stoned when it bites you.' Kind of a stupid idea, I'd have liked to have left it as something talked about but unillustrated, but I also wanted to end the mini with a drug freakout. Hint:

(And another one from Whisper of the Heart, just because I like this interior)

Use your desk! [29 Oct 2009|02:43pm]

I don't know if this is the best way to post these, in terms of giving image credit. The first is Moebius and the second is Joost Swarte. The rest, click them to see. Post desks in the comments, too. Yours, anyone's.

Some sketches from the past couple of months. Working on big gouache-color drawings, accumulating some 'scenes' to be thinking about. Slow to start this semester, but my studio is in the best room in the building, the same room I used to hide out to work on my huge drawings last year (it had this like 6' x 8' smooth formica table, so satisfying.) Getting started drawing some little comics, too. The way I've been starting them is by writing down some dialogue, which is basically a problem to draw my way out of. there's also a couple things i drew recently up on my flickr.

I've been thinking a lot about when artwork is sending you these mixed signals, things to distract you -- and in this case, the 'action' is somewhat beside the point, and just an excuse to draw whatever the action calls for. But at the same time, when it falls into the background like that, it makes it that much more surprising when it actually does become the focus. That's why I really want to keep up with this longer comic, more potential for unexpected tonal changes.

spent a good morning the other day fascinated by some pictures of mini motorcycles. the funniest part to me is how bogus they look when a person is riding them vs. how fantastic they are without a figure in the frame for scale reference. seems like there's a borderline between model-scale and functional-scale, and at what point does a still-operational model become pointless? thinking about objects in relation to humans, claes oldenburg, etc. pretty funny.

been reading a lot of moebius. i guess i've been aware of him since i was in middle school or so, because i had the viz nausicaa comic with the poster by him, and the weird conversation between him and miyazaki. but i think i'm diving into it at just the right time. he's an obvious touchstone for many many people but i get that feeling when i look at his drawings that he draws for many of the same reasons i do.

So here are the 5 pages that come after the last ones. I am embarassed by some of the drawings. But instead of redoing the individual parts that dissatisfy me right now, I'm going to keep going and redo this whole chapter later if necessary. I started here but that doesn't make this the right form for this to take. For instance, I'm struck by how different these characters look every time I draw them, and I am already tired of trying to hide that inconsistency, after only nine pages. I need to allow things to occur more naturally.

Here's four pages of the comic I've been working on, still probably called Waves. It works as a sort of opener or chapter zero in a way because I like what happens to this situation out of context, what you grasp and what you don't, but it's not the beginning. The beginning is actually mostly inane bratty dialogue, but I haven't even drawn it yet. Hopefully I'll finish the second part of this chapter-zero thing in the next couple of days and post that, too.

ps the character in the tunic thing is named Medic and the one with dark hair is named Kevin ('real' names revealed later, to be sure)

Comics [31 May 2008|04:40am]
Here are some drawings i made at the beginning of last semester. One-page sequences, a coming-clean for me in terms of my looking to comics for inspiration, actually striving for something legible. I guess i want to write in this more often, i've been using this lately for little bits. I'll have my new site up soon, ilia installed a wiki for me, lots of drawings the internet hasn't seen yet.

Sup dudes, I've been making a lot of work and getting my things lined-up and done-with. Proud that I got my final works started so early but the long hours in the studios and the sleeping not in my bed but on floors and friends' futons kind of gets to me, slows time or at least distorts it. I've only experienced a couple hours of daylight out in the IRL this week. I'll be in Louisville in Exactly Two Weeks, plz hang out with me ok

On The Internet:
Kevin Bewersdorf and Guthrie Lonergan at And/Or Gallery(Maxximum Sorrow rug wtf wtf!)
Completely puzzling Japanese kids show
Vomit Ride scene from Problem Child 2
The Limes (listen to "Beyond Blue")
Sambassadeur's new album 'Migration'

I'm going to Louisville this Wednesday, and I'm coming back here on Sunday. Stuff I want to do while I'm there:
-Have at least one of those really surprising and packed days where it feels like I'm being rushed from location to location, and I keep seeing people I know or used to know along the way, a badly planned tour of a city I've completely memorized.
-Go to a part of town that I haven't been before, adventures to be found (remember the abandoned Wal-Mart? That can't be the best Kentucky's got)
-Lie down a lot. Appreciate the differences between feeling at home in a place like Louisville and feeling at home in Brooklyn.
-See a couple of movies, they don't got a (three) dollar-theater here.

I was always pretty interested in that list from that episode of Hey Arnold, the list of the things you need to do, as a kid -- one of the Kidz in The Nineties -- on a Saturday, in order to have the perfect Saturday, and how No Kid Has Ever Done It, because something always goes wrong.
